Registration for the drawing of the starting spots for the 2021 BMW BERLIN-MARATHON begins

At the moment, it is raining records and best times among the top athletes. For example, Kenenisa Bekele’s old world record in the 10,000 metres was cracked. Joshua Cheptegei broke it with a time of 26:11.00 minutes. Approximately two weeks ago, the German Melat Kejeta won silver at the half-marathon world championship, spectacularly beating the German record. But what about the amateur athletes and the age group aces? They also want to show what they are made of. That’s why we’re hoping for a 2021 BMW BERLIN MARATHON and are starting registration today for the drawing of the starting spots, so that on September 25-26, 2021, top and recreational athletes can all make it to the finish at the Brandenburg Gate - if possible with personal bests.

Review: #20139 Challenge

On the last weekend in September, nearly 15,000 participants from over 120 countries took part in the #20139 Challenge to find out how many kilometres they could cover in 2:01:39 hours. This time corresponds to the world record set by Eliud Kipchoge in 2018 at the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON. A relay team of top athletes — women, men, skaters, and youth — also took up the challenge on a loop around the Berlin Victory Column. After 105 rounds, the time had been reached: The men’s team with Philipp Pflieger, Richard Ringer, Florian Orth and Johannes Motschmann beat the world record of Kipchoge with a time 2:01:34 hours. For the inline skaters, the damp weather of the past days posed a special challenge during the final preparations. Their resulting distance of 70.24 kilometres was great under the conditions. The women’s quartet (Anja Scherl, Melat Kejeta, Christina Gerdes, Deborah Schöneborn) was also convincing and achieved a result of 36.58 kilometres, ahead of the Junior Relay with 30.55 kilometres. A big thank you again to all who participated in the #20139 Challenge.

A quite different marathon year

BMW informs:

We look back on a quite different marathon year 2020. Despite the cancellation of the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON we were running diligently and that shows that running persists, no matter what. Nearly 15,000 happy runners from over 120 nations proved this in the 20139 Community Challenge. Not only the relays of the 20139 Challenge at the Siegessäule delivered great performances. The community ran an incredible 139,736 kilometers! We would like to thank you for this achievement and hope that you too will remember this special year as a successful year of running.Remember to transfer your participation right to next year to be part of the 2021 BMW BERLIN-MARATHON and enjoy a great running experience together. Those who do not have a starting slot yet, can register for the raffle of starting slots from October 28th until November 25th, 2020. We are looking forward to see you and to run together again in 2021.
