The BMW BERLIN-MARATHON is returning to the RTL family after 14 years. The Cologne-based broadcaster has agreed an exclusive national TV rights package with SCC EVENTS for the next three years. After ntv in 2010, RTL will now be there live for the first time when around 50,000 runners compete in the 50th anniversary of the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON on 29 September 2024. In addition to the live broadcast, various RTL Group channels are planning to accompany the 2024 anniversary event with extensive pre- and post-event coverage.
Higher visibility for the event
Inga Leschek, Programme Director RTL and RTL+: "The BMW BERLIN-MARATHON is a major sporting event that not only moves the capital, but inspires whole Germany. We are therefore delighted to be able to offer another major sporting event a home on RTL and to further expand our sports coverage with reliable partners."
Jürgen Lock, CEO of SCC EVENTS, on the cooperation with RTL: "Realising the coverage with a media group that sees sport as a central component of its growth strategy underlines the international and national significance of the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON as a beacon in the sports landscape. We are looking forward to the renewed cooperation with RTL, which will enable our event, which as a founding member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors is one of the world's top-class events of its kind, to achieve an even greater presence of top-class, mass sports and inclusive sport throughout Germany. We are certain that this cooperation will allow even more people to be inspired by the fascination of the marathon and its positive emotions. We want to motivate people to be more active and we have a great partner in RTL Group to realise this."
Long-standing partnership with "RTL Spendenmarathon" continues
The long-standing partnership with the "RTL Spendenmarathon" - the longest-running charity programme in Germany - will also be continued. Since 2009, the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON has already raised donations totalling 822,199 euros for the "Stiftung RTL - Wir helfen Kindern e.V.", which has benefited needy children in charitable institutions in Berlin on a one-to-one basis. In 2024, SCC EVENTS will donate a total of 200 race entries for the 50th BMW BERLIN-MARATHON to the "RTL Spendenmarathon".
Wolfram Kons, CEO of "Stiftung RTL - Wir helfen Kindern e.V.": "Germany's most important marathon and the "RTL Spendenmarathon", the longest charity programme on German television, are a perfect match. Everyone gives their all for top sporting performance with social responsibility and sustainable help for children. Thank you!"
At United Charity, Europe's largest charity auction portal, interested runners can secure the last race entries for the anniversary edition of Germany's largest marathon. Initially, 150 places can be purchased directly for 750 euros and then a further 50 of the coveted starting numbers will be auctioned off via the platform with a starting bid of 750 euros.
Once again, 100 per cent of the proceeds will go to children in need in Berlin.
There is also growing anticipation for the VIP "RTL Spendenmarathon" relay team, which will once again be competing in the 50th BMW BERLIN-MARATHON on 29 September 2024.

About the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON A group of runners from Sport-Club Charlottenburg, one of Germany's renowned athletics clubs, organised the first BERLIN-MARATHON in 1974. In 1981, the race was moved from Grunewald to the centre of West Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, a new era began. On 30 September 1990, three days before reunification, the course of the marathon ran through the Brandenburg Gate and both parts of Berlin. In recent years, the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON has developed into one of the world's best road races and an important part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors. A total of thirteen world records have been set since 1974. In 2023, Ethiopian Tigst Assefa set a historic world record in the women's marathon race with a time of 2:11:53. She was the first woman to run under 2:12 hours and beat the old record by more than 2 minutes.
