ABBOTTWMM today confirmed that the TCS Sydney Marathon will join the series in 2025 to become the seventh marathon in the Abbott World Marathon Majors series.
The TCS Sydney Marathon, which will take place on August 31, 2025, joins six races including the Tokyo Marathon, the Boston Marathon presented by Bank of America, the TCS London Marathon, the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and the TCS New York City Marathon as part of the greatest marathon series in the world.
The Sydney Marathon is the largest marathon in Oceania and saw a record 20,272 finishers during its 2024 race on September 15, allowing it to pass its second consecutive assessment and become an Abbott World Marathon Major.

The current Six Star program for runners striving to complete the original six Abbott World Marathon Major races.
AbbottWMM has committed to keeping the Six Star medal which will continue to be awarded for this amazing achievement even when the Nine Star medal becomes available.
To help commemorate every runner’s journey and race achievements, AbbottWMM also introduced a commemorative coin for each race and Sydney now has one. Custom displays can be purchased to showcase the runner’s achievements from two races to all seven. The full range is available here.

Criteria used to assess candidates in the current evaluation process include every aspect of the runner experience from Expo to race course, the standard of elite athletes recruited, all operational procedures, safety standards and much more. The most recent race to be admitted to the series was the Tokyo Marathon in 2013.

What will happen to the Six Star Medal?
The Six Star program remains unchanged. The Six Star medal will continue to be awarded to runners who complete the original six Majors.
When could more Majors be added?
The two remaining candidate races are Cape Town and Shanghai. Both must pass two consecutive evaluations, which means Cape Town may be added in 2026 at the earliest and Shanghai in 2027 at the earliest.
How will the Nine Star Medal be awarded?
If the remaining two candidates are successful, the earliest the Nine Star medal will begin is 2027. The plan is for this to be awarded at the end of the marathons in the same way the Six Star medal is awarded.
What is the collectible range?

About the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON
A group of runners from Sport-Club Charlottenburg, one of Germany's renowned athletics clubs, organised the first BERLIN-MARATHON in 1974. In 1981, the race was moved from Grunewald to the centre of West Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, a new era began. On 30 September 1990, three days before reunification, the course of the marathon ran through the Brandenburg Gate and both parts of Berlin. In recent years, the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON has developed into one of the world's best road races and an important part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors. A total of thirteen world records have been set since 1974. In 2023, Ethiopian Tigst Assefa set a historic world record in the women's marathon race with a time of 2:11:53. She was the first woman to run under 2:12 hours and beat the old record by more than 2 minutes. In 2024 at the 50th BMW BERLIN-MARATHON , 54,280 finishers were (verifiably) registered at the finish line. With this verified record result, the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON is now the largest marathon in the world.
